IPTV on Chromecast with Google TV

Install a player from the Play Store or sideload one, pick native app over casting, and keep a small device running smoothly.

Can you watch IPTV on Chromecast with Google TV? Yes. Chromecast with Google TV, the newer Google TV Streamer and TVs with Google TV built in all run Android TV underneath, so they install IPTV player apps directly. Get a player from the Play Store, or sideload one with Downloader after allowing unknown apps in developer options. Then enter your login and watch with the remote. Casting from a phone also works, but a native app is smoother.

On Google TV the player runs on the device itself, so the phone stays free.

Which Google TV device do you have?

  • Chromecast with Google TV (4K or HD) — a small dongle with a remote. Google has stopped selling it, but it remains widely used and runs IPTV players well.
  • Google TV Streamer — the newer set-top box, with more storage and a built-in Ethernet port.
  • TVs with Google TV built in — many Sony, TCL and Hisense models, among others. The steps below apply to these as well.
  • Older Chromecasts without a remote — these cannot install apps at all. They can only receive a cast from a phone.

Step 1: install a player from the Play Store

Open the Apps tab, search for an IPTV player, and install it. Several well-known players are listed in the Play Store, including IPTV Smarters and TiviMate. If the one you want is there, this is the simplest route and updates arrive automatically.

Step 2: sideload if the app is not in the store

If your preferred player is not in the Play Store, you can install it from its developer with a helper app:

  1. Install Downloader from the Play Store.
  2. Open Settings → System → About and select Android TV OS build repeatedly until a message says you are a developer.
  3. Go back to the settings for apps and security, find the option for installing unknown apps, and allow it for Downloader only.
  4. Open Downloader, enter the developer's official download address, and install the player.

Menu names shift slightly between Google TV versions, so if a label differs, look for "unknown apps" in the settings search. Only install players from sources you trust.

Step 3: add your login

Open the player and choose the Xtream Codes option if it has one: enter the server address, username and password. Otherwise paste the M3U link. Typing long addresses with the remote is slow; the Google TV app on your phone includes a keyboard for this. Let the channel list and guide load fully before you start judging streams.

Casting vs a native app

Casting sends a stream from an app on your phone to the TV. It is handy for a one-off, but the phone has to stay involved and few casting apps show a proper guide. A native player on the Google TV device itself uses the TV remote, switches channels quickly and shows the full guide.

Which player to choose

Any player that accepts Xtream Codes or an M3U link will work. Pick one with a proper guide grid, favorites and a clear way to set an EPG offset, since those matter most on a TV. If you already use a player on another device, using the same one here keeps everything familiar. Try it during the trial before paying for any premium player features.

Remote tips

  • Favorites first. Mark the channels you watch most so they sit at the top of the list.
  • Learn the player's shortcuts. Most players let you open the guide or switch to the previous channel with a single button.
  • Use the phone keyboard in the Google TV app for searching long channel names.
  • Remap if needed. Some players let you change what each remote button does in their settings.

Storage and speed tips

Chromecast with Google TV has modest storage, and a large IPTV playlist with a full guide takes up space. Keep it running smoothly:

  • Uninstall apps you do not use, and clear the player's cache from the app settings now and then.
  • Hide channel groups you never watch so the player has less to load.
  • Restart the device every week or two.
  • Use Ethernet if you can. The dongle needs a USB-C power adapter with an Ethernet port; the Streamer has one built in.

Troubleshooting on Google TV

  • The player will not install from Downloader. Check that unknown apps are allowed for Downloader specifically, not for another app, and that there is enough free storage.
  • The login is rejected. Retype the server address carefully, including http:// and any port number. Use the phone keyboard to avoid remote typos.
  • The guide is empty. Give it a few minutes on first load, then use the player's option to update the EPG. If times are off by an hour or more, look for an EPG offset setting.
  • Streams pause in the evening. Test with the device on Ethernet or with the router closer. If the pausing stops, the cause is Wi-Fi, not the service.
  • The remote stops responding in the player. Restart the device by unplugging it for a few seconds; this clears most remote and app glitches.

Casting from a phone, if you must

If you only have an older Chromecast without a remote, casting is the way. Install a player on your phone that supports casting, make sure the phone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network, start a channel and tap the cast icon. Keep the phone charged and nearby, since it controls playback. It works for watching a single game or film, but channel surfing and browsing the guide are much easier with a Google TV device and a native app.

Test it during the free trial

Install the player first, then request the no-card IPTV trial for 24 hours on WhatsApp so all of it goes on testing. Watch in the evening, try channel switching with the remote, and check the guide on the channels you care about. If it suits you, see plan lengths and multi-screen discounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install IPTV apps on Chromecast with Google TV?

Yes. Chromecast with Google TV runs a full version of Android TV with the Google TV interface, so you can install IPTV players from the Play Store or sideload one with an installer app such as Downloader.

Does the old Chromecast without a remote work for IPTV?

Only by casting. The older Chromecast models without a remote cannot install apps, so you need a phone app that supports casting to send each stream. It works, but a Google TV device with a native player is much smoother.

Is the Google TV Streamer better for IPTV than the Chromecast?

It has more storage and memory and a built-in Ethernet port, which helps with large playlists and steady streams. The setup steps for IPTV are the same on both.

Why does my IPTV player keep closing on Chromecast?

Usually low storage or memory. Clear the player's cache, uninstall apps you do not use, and restart the device. If the playlist is very large, hiding unused channel groups also helps.
