The fastest IPTV black screen fix is to change the video decoder in your player app, because most black screens, especially ones where audio still plays, are a decoding problem rather than a dead stream. If that fails, lower the device output to 1080p, turn off HDR and frame-rate matching, reseat the HDMI cable and update the app. When only one or two channels stay black after all of that, the stream source needs a refresh, which support can do over WhatsApp.
What causes IPTV black screen?
- ▸ Wrong video player / decoder setting in your IPTV app
- ▸ HDMI handshake issue between device and TV
- ▸ Stream codec not supported by the current player
- ▸ 4K/HDR output mismatch between device and TV
- ▸ Outdated IPTV app version
Diagnose the Black Screen Before You Fix It
Two minutes of testing tells you which fix to start with. Note whether you hear audio, whether every channel is affected or only some, and whether the same channel plays in a different app or on a phone. Then match what you see to the table below.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Audio plays, picture black, all channels | Decoder or HDR/4K output mismatch | Fix 1, then Fix 4 and 5 |
| Audio plays, picture black, only some channels | HEVC (H.265) channels on a device that cannot decode them | Fix 1 and Fix 2 |
| No audio, no picture, menus still visible | Stream not starting: login, playlist or source issue | Check your account, then Fix 7 |
| Whole TV goes black, even the app menu | HDMI handshake or resolution the TV rejects | Fix 3 and Fix 4 |
| Black for a few seconds, then plays | Frame-rate switching or slow channel start | Fix 5 |
If the picture freezes or keeps spinning rather than going black, that is a speed problem, and our guide to stopping IPTV buffering is the better place to start.
Fix 1: Change the Video Player in Your IPTV App
- 1In TiviMate: Settings → Playback → switch the video decoder between hardware and software.
- 2In IPTV Smarters: Settings → Player Selection → try the other built-in player or an external one such as VLC.
- 3Test the same channel after changing the player.
💡 If hardware decoding gives a black picture, software decoding usually shows it (at the cost of more CPU load), and the reverse is also true.
Fix 2: Change the Stream Type (H.264 vs H.265)
- 1Some devices don't support H.265 (HEVC) decoding — causing black screen.
- 2In your IPTV app, look for a stream quality or format option.
- 3Switch from H.265 to H.264 if available, or ask our IPTV subscription support to switch your stream format.
Fix 3: Disconnect and Reconnect the HDMI Cable
- 1Unplug the HDMI cable from both your streaming device and TV.
- 2Wait 10 seconds and reconnect firmly.
- 3Power cycle both the TV and streaming device.
- 4This resets the HDMI handshake which often causes black screen.
Fix 4: Lower Your Display Resolution
- 1On Firestick: Settings → Display & Sounds → Display → Video Resolution → change from 4K to 1080p.
- 2On Android TV: Settings → Device Preferences → Display → Resolution → 1080p.
- 3Test if black screen resolves at the lower resolution.
Fix 5: Disable HDR or Match Content Settings
- 1On Firestick: Settings → Display & Sounds → Display → Match Original Frame Rate → Off.
- 2Also try: Dolby Vision → Off.
- 3HDR/Dolby Vision handshake failures commonly cause black screens on channels that broadcast in SDR.
Fix 6: Update Your IPTV App
- 1Open your app store (Play Store, Amazon Store).
- 2Search for your IPTV app and check if an update is available.
- 3Install the update and restart the app.
- 4An outdated app may fail to decode newer stream formats.
Fix 7: Contact IPTV Free Trial Support
- 1If black screen only affects specific channels, the stream itself may need to be reset.
- 2Message our IPTV service on WhatsApp with your Username and the channel name.
- 3Our team can switch you to an alternative stream source for affected channels.
Device-Specific Black Screen Notes
- Amazon Firestick: older Lite and first-generation sticks struggle with HEVC and 4K channels. Turn off Match Original Frame Rate and set the resolution to Auto or 1080p. If the stick runs hot or has little free storage, restart it from Settings → My Fire TV → Restart. Our Firestick IPTV setup walkthrough covers the full app install.
- Android TV boxes and Google TV: the decoder setting in the app matters most. Also check Settings → Display for a forced 4K or HDR mode, and switch it off while testing.
- Samsung and LG smart TVs: TV-native players rely on the TV's own decoder, so a firmware update often fixes channels that were black. On Samsung, also try turning off Auto Motion Plus and HDMI UHD Color for the input you use; see the Samsung TV IPTV setup steps or the webOS IPTV setup steps.
- Apple TV and iPhone: if one player shows black, try another app from the App Store, since each app ships its own playback engine. The Apple TV IPTV app options page lists the common ones.
- MAG boxes: reboot from the portal, then check that the output resolution in system settings matches what the TV supports.
Black Screen, Buffering or Channels Not Loading?
These three problems look similar on the sofa but have different causes. A black screen with audio is a display or decoding problem. A spinning wheel or picture that stops and starts is buffering, which points to network speed, Wi-Fi signal or ISP throttling. A channel list that is empty, or channels that fail with an error message, is usually a login, playlist URL or server address problem; the checklist for channels that will not load walks through that one.
If the video plays but the programme guide is blank, that is a separate EPG issue and is covered in fixing a missing TV guide.
What to Check During Your Free Trial
A black screen on day one is easiest to sort out while you are still testing. During the free 24-hour trial, play a sample of channels you actually watch, including at least one 4K channel and one sports channel, on the exact device and app you plan to keep. If any stay black after Fix 1 to Fix 5, message support before the trial ends so the problem is solved before you pay for a full IPTV service plan. You can request your trial login on WhatsApp; no credit card is needed.

IPTV Black Screen FAQ
Why is my IPTV showing a black screen?
Most black screens come from the player, not the stream: a decoder that cannot handle the channel's codec, a 4K or HDR output setting the TV rejects, or an HDMI handshake that failed. Less often the login has expired or the source for that one channel is down. Test a second channel and a second app to find out which.
How do I fix the black screen on TiviMate?
Open TiviMate Settings, then Playback, and switch the decoder between hardware and software, then replay the channel. If that changes nothing, turn off AFR (auto frame rate) in the same menu, clear the app cache from your device settings and reload the playlist.
Why do only some channels go black?
Channels encoded in HEVC (H.265) or broadcast in 4K need hardware that can decode them. Older Firesticks, budget Android boxes and some web-based players play H.264 channels fine and show black on HEVC ones. Switching the decoder or using a newer device usually solves it.
Is a black screen with sound the same problem as buffering?
No. Buffering means the data is arriving too slowly. A black screen with audio means the data is arriving but the video cannot be decoded or displayed, so changing your internet speed rarely helps; changing the player, resolution or HDR settings usually does.
What should I send support if nothing works?
Send your username, device model, app name and version, the exact channel names that stay black and whether audio plays. A short phone video of the screen helps. With those details support can check the stream source instead of repeating the basic steps.
Black Screen Still Not Fixed?
Send support your device, app and the channels affected, and they can check the stream source for you.
